Bag drop at departure and the carousel on arrival cost somewhere between forty minutes and an hour and a half, each way. On a two-week holiday that's noise. On a 48-hour weekend it's a meal, a museum, or the difference between arriving in time for dinner and arriving in time for bed.

Wear one set, pack the rest. One pair of shoes on your feet, and only add a second if a specific booking demands it. The bulkiest jacket goes on your body through the airport. That leaves the bag mostly empty, which is exactly the margin you want for whatever you buy while you're there.

A city break is a walking holiday that doesn't announce itself as one — 20,000 steps a day is normal. Whatever you wear needs to already be broken in. Blister plasters packed in advance cost nothing; finding a pharmacy in an unfamiliar city on a Sunday costs an afternoon.
