Ski trip packing list for a week
Rent the skis, bring the helmet and goggles — fit is the part rental can't get right. And if you bring your own boots, they travel in the cabin with you, because nothing else on the trip is harder to replace.

What's different about this trip
Rent skis, own the things that touch your body
Rental skis are fine and getting them serviced is someone else's problem. Helmets and goggles are different: a helmet needs to fit your head, and rental goggles are scratched, fogged, and shared. A week of helmet rental usually costs more than a decent helmet anyway. If you own boots, bring them — badly fitted boots ruin a week faster than bad snow does.
Boots go in the cabin
If your bag is delayed, everything in it can be replaced or rented at the resort — except boots moulded to your feet. Carry them on. It looks absurd at the gate and it is the correct decision, and it also means you're wearing or carrying the heaviest item rather than paying for it in the hold.
The sunburn nobody plans for
Snow reflects up to 80% of UV back upward, and altitude adds roughly 4% more UV per 300m. The result is burnt nostrils, a burnt chin, and burnt lips — the surfaces facing the ground. SPF 50 in the morning, an SPF lip balm in your jacket pocket, and goggles rather than sunglasses on the mountain, because the tan line from goggles is the good outcome.
Ski clothes are heavy; check the allowance
Salopettes, jacket, boots and helmet add up fast. Most airlines sell a discounted ski-bag allowance if booked in advance and charge punitively at the desk if not. Wear the jacket and the heaviest layer to the airport. And pack fewer après clothes than instinct suggests — the evenings are a fleece and jeans, not a wardrobe.
