On a multi-stop road trip you'll check into somewhere new most nights. Without a small bag holding a change of clothes and your toiletries, you unload the entire boot every evening and repack it every morning. One small bag that lives on top, restocked from the big one every couple of days, removes the single most tedious part of driving holidays.

The documents a roadside stop asks for

Driving licence, and an International Driving Permit where required — several countries insist on one even for EU or US licences. Vehicle registration, insurance documentation, and breakdown cover details you can find without signal. If you're crossing borders in a hire car, check the rental agreement actually permits it; plenty don't, and the insurance voids at the frontier.

Offline maps and a phone mount

Coverage disappears in canyons, mountains and long rural stretches — exactly the places you're driving to. Download the region in advance. A phone mount and a charger per person avoid the two most common in-car arguments, and a paper map or written route as a backup costs nothing and works when the phone overheats on the dashboard, which it will.

The boot is not a hotel room

No weight limit means people pack six pairs of shoes and a coffee machine. Keep the categories the same as any other trip and use the extra capacity for the things that genuinely improve a drive: a cooler with cold drinks, real snacks, a blanket, and a sunshade for when the car is parked in the sun all afternoon.
