What's different about this trip

Pack for four days, wash twice

Ten days of clothing is a fantasy weight. Four days plus a sink wash or a laundrette covers it, and the clothes you actually re-wear are the ones you chose deliberately. Quick-dry fabrics make the sink wash viable: roll a wet garment in a towel and stand on it before hanging, and it's dry by morning.

Under 10kg is the target, and it's achievable

Weigh the packed bag at home. Above about 10kg, walking from a station to a hostel stops being a walk and becomes a chore that shapes your decisions — you take taxis you didn't need and skip the place up the hill. The savings come from clothing volume and from not carrying 'just in case' gear you can buy anywhere.

Packing cubes are an organisation system, not a compression trick

You'll open your bag on a bunk, in a dorm, with the lights off, next to someone asleep. One cube per category means retrieving a t-shirt without unpacking everything you own onto a shared floor. That's the actual benefit; the space saving is minor.

The dorm kit

Earplugs, an eye mask, a head torch, a padlock, and flip-flops for the shower. Every one of them addresses a specific and near-certain event: someone packing at 4am, a light left on, a late arrival, an unlockable locker, a shared bathroom floor. Pack these first and the rest is negotiable.

Frequently asked questions

How heavy should a backpack be for ten days?

Under 10kg is the target, and it is achievable for a mild-climate trip. Above that, the twenty-minute walk from the station to the hostel starts shaping your decisions — which neighbourhood you book, whether you explore before check-in, whether you take the extra day trip. Weigh the packed bag at home.

How many clothes for a ten-day backpacking trip?

Four days' worth, washed twice. A ten-day wardrobe is heavy, and the whole point of backpacking is that the bag comes with you rather than waiting in a room. Sink-washing a couple of garments takes twenty minutes and dries overnight if you pick the fabrics for it.

Do packing cubes actually save space?

They save time and sanity, not volume. Cubes do not compress meaningfully — they keep clean separate from dirty and let you find one item in a dorm at 6am without unpacking the whole bag onto someone else's bunk. Buy them for the organisation, not the space claim.
